Queen for a Day event at the Women's Expo at Catonsville Community College.

And what a great day it was -- from start to finish, a memorable day. We had incredible MTA drivers - actually, Cathy awarded our return driver with a crown necklace she received at the event. And I awarded mine to her evening aid while Cathy awarded her the "Queen" crown she received at the event.

The "CROWNS" were in abundance - America Mrs., Ms. Maryland, Mrs. Maryland, Ms. Teen West Virginia and Ms. Wheelchair MD 2010. The Crowns were everywhere.

From makeovers to clothes to purses, the vendors were great. Sheila had her hair and nails redo while Cathy and I enjoyed chatting with old friends, and some new friends.

Janice Jackson, Executive Director of W.E.A.N., recognized all the previous Ms. Wheelchair Maryland's, which of course included Cathy, as well as all the volunteers. Each event educated and entertained, but most of all, provided a wider glimpse into the world of the disabled.

Most recent event was on board the Royal Caribbean Enchantment of the Seas to the Eastern Caribbean. A 12 day adventure from Baltimore, MD to the ports of Labadee, Haiti, Dominion Republic, San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Maarten and Tortola, BVI and back to Baltimore, MD, and for me, back to Richmond, VA. This group of 25, which included many with cerebral palsy, down syndrome, blind and amputees left a lasting impression on the crew and passengers of this cruise ship.

Disabled does not mean Unable was the motto of this adventurous group. They put this able bodied aid to shame with their courage to experience new things. And for my sister, Cathy Porter, Ms. Wheelchair MD 2007, a dip in the San Juan ocean in a beach chair at a private beach with a private life guard! Add to this incredible adventure, a private bus tour of St. Maarten which included lunch at Sunset Beach, or better known as Airport Beach. A beach where HUGE airplanes fly directly over the beach to land across the road. Check out www.nancycarey.com and click on Royal Caribbean to enjoy some of the photos from the cruise.

May 2011 be a year of CURES of all disabilities worldwide. I leave you with a quote from a very special Ms. Wheelchair MD 2008 Rose Williams. When asked her final question at a previous Ms. Wheelchair MD competition, “If there was one disease you could cure, what would it be?” many thought Rose would say cerebral palsy, but she didn’t. Rose responded, “I would cure the frown, because if you can cure the frown, you can cure anything!” A wonderful quote that has blessed my life over, and over again.

Let’s make 2011 another memorable year for the disability community. Information is a valuable asset, and never runs dry. Send your resources and events to richmonddisabilityexaminer@gmail.com.

Alex McArthur is the new Ms. Wheelchair America 2011

Congratulations to Alex McArthur, Ms. Wheelchair North Carolina!

North Carolina is making a splash at the Ms. Wheelchair America program -- it holds the title for 2010 and 2011.

At 22 years old, Alex is now Ms. Wheelchair America 2011. Not me. I am amazed at the response from the Richmond Disability Examiner articles. The emails of gratitude have warmed my heart. 82 articles and 4,900+ readers since February 2010. WOW!

Since I began writing the disability resource and event articles in February, I have been educated with a wealth of information about the disability community. My knowledge has expanded beyond Cerebral Palsy. I wasn't aware of all the resources available until I had to research to find them. And what a gold mine I found.

Each article reminds me how blessed I am -- that I am healthy! I, as does the world, take our gifts for granted; the ability to see, talk and walk. It is not until we are face to face with a disability that we see ourselves for who we are. Either we have compassion for those less fortunate and do something about it, OR, we turn a blind eye to the disability and forget it exists.

I opt to see it and do something to help. I hope you feel the same.

The disability world is short of advocates, those who not only see, but have compassion to help. The rewards of "helps" is amazing -- it literally changes lives of both the giver and the receiver.

I leave you with this request: FIND a "helps" that matches your talent, than GIVE freely.

Life can be spent in constant personal enjoyment with no eternal rewards, or in constant personal giving that returns enjoyment beyond your dreams. The choice is yours.

Nancy

Richmond Disability Resources

As the Richmond Disability Examiner for www.examiner.com/richmond, my knowledge of disability resources have expanded.

It's amazing how many resources are available for those in need, especially those available from the state.

And, I've been amazed at how many resources are seeking volunteers -- have a few hours, there are many places seeking your help.

The disability community evolves around need and resource and a place to find the two. An event offering an abundance of resources for the disability community.

Sixty+ vendors provided information about their specific resource to hundreds of attendees. As the Richmond Disability Examiner, I was amazed how receptive the vendors were to my offer of FREE PUBLICITY for their outreach. They were eager to share their resource with the Richmond community.

I learned a lot about resources and events since accepting the challenge of writing for http://www.examiner.com/. My scope of disability knowledge has expanded to include such things as Music Therapy.

I also learned a lot about ME during these past nine weeks of writing -- God is in control of my future. Through his leading, and my obedience to that still small voice, the 35 articles written have educated 2,135 readers in nine weeks! Wow.

What does my future hold as a writer -- GOD KNOWS, I'm just along for the experience!

Niki Swann Ms. Wheelchair VA 2010-2011

WOW! I now have a new appreciation for judging. It is a serious obligation, and certainly not one to be taken lightly.

It was a learning experience for me; it stretched my comfort zones by miles. It taught me valuable lessons in seeing beyond the physical. These ladies were amazing -- totally amazing. The ROLLED through their fears and ROLLED into victory lane. All of them were winners in my eyes.

2006, four years ago, I walked through the doors of the Holiday Inn, Midlothian,VA as a volunteer. 2010 I walked through the doors of the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center as a judge. Four years of incredible growth and knowledge in the disability community.

The Ms. Wheelchair America program has changed the lives of EVERYONE involved - from the contestants, to the volunteers, to the judges. Richmond Disability Examiner for www.examiner.com/richmond. I write about my favorite things e.g. resources and events for the disability community. Check out my website at www.examiner.com/x-37348-richmond-disability-examiner.

AND ... I am attending the Ms. Wheelchair VA 2010-2011 Pageant at the end of the month, but this time, not as a volunteer, but as a judge. Oh my -- I feel like I have graduated from a four year university. Four years ago I stepped across the threshold of the Ms. Wheelchair VA 2006-2007 Pageant as a volunteer. This year I step across the threshold as a judge. I was overwhelmed at the offer.

AND ... the sequel, The Adventures Continue, is close to going to press. Hard to believe it has been almost a year since My Sister My Hero Cathy Porter Ms. Wheelchair MD 2007 was released. Once again, we will release the sequel at the World of Possibility Expo in Maryland on May 14th.

Stay tuned for additional events -- they never end to amaze me at what the wheelchair users can accomplish.

The Power of Language

Did you know that WORDS hurt? I'm sure you do. But do you also know that the use of the wrong words can also inflict pain? I'm sure you do also.

Kathie Snow's article "People First Language" reminded me of the power of words. Her article references the correct use of descriptive words relating to the disabilities community. Please read her entire article at http://www.disabilityisnatural.com/

What did I learn?

"Handicapped" is an archaic term -- it's no longer used in any federal legislation - that evokes negative images (pity, fear and more.)

"Disabled" is also not appropriate. Traffic reports frequently say, "disabled vehicle." (They once said stalled car.") In that context, "disabled"means "broke down." People with disabilities are not broken down!

Words are descriptive - they describe a person, a place or a thing. To correctly describe people, we must use the correct descriptive word.

The most important lesson I learned from her article:

People First Language puts the person before the disability, and it describes what a person has, not who a person is.

For example:

SAY - People with disabilities INSTEAD OF - The handicapped or disabled.

Let's take Kathie Snow's advice and THINK before we SPEAK.

Nancy Carey
Author: My Sister My Hero Cathy Porter Ms. Wheelchair Maryland 2007
http://www.nancycarey.com/

Happy New Year

Welcome to 2010 --a year of promised memories that will change your life.

My 2010 is certain to be full of adventures with my wheelchair angels -- specifically Cathy Porter, Ms. Wheelchair Maryland 2007. Life is never dull when I'm volunteering with Cathy and her incredible friends.

Cathy, and eight wheelchair angels, boarded the Celebrity Mercury for a twelve day cruise to the Eastern Caribbean. Their goal -- to enjoy the open seas and an adventure of a lifetime.

Travel with the differently abled is an adventure indeed. What I saw was amazing -- wheelchair ladies dancing the night away with the able bodied. And yes, they made a HUGE impression on the passengers of the Celebrity Mercury.

Such an impression was made by Juliette Rizzo -- she won the dance contest against four able bodies couples. Her dance - THE TANGO. Her partner - Gabriel, a cruise professional dancer.

The Navigator Nightclub was overflowing with guests -- most unaware that one couple was differenly abled. It was a magic moment when Juliette and Gabriel rolled to the center of the dance floor -- then the music began and moment by moment the audience was mesmerized by the performance.

Dancing a TANGO is difficult for the able bodied, but add the power wheelchair and you have a sight to behold. Although it takes me hours and hours to write, it is a gift that keeps on giving year after year. Each member of my family receives their own PERSONALIZED review with words of wisdom from the Father in Heaven.

Thank GOD for the calendar on my refrigerator and my monthly reviews – they hold the memories in great detail. If I had to “remember” all the details of 365 days, it would be a MIRACLE.

As I wrote this year’s review, my heart overflowed with memories that changed our lives – from the marriage of my youngest son to the engagement of my eldest son. My sons are not my little boys anymore – but my adult boys whom I cherish and love deeply. They are expanding our family with daughters. I’m blessed to call them my friends as well as my sons. As a young mother I watched them grow in physical size and strength. As a mature mother, I now watch them grow in spiritual strength. Although the world tries to snatch them away, their faith keeps them close to the heart of God.

Children are GIFTS from God and we need to remind them daily how precious they are to us. We need to remind them constantly of God’s love for them – not just on Christmas.

It’s the little things that make our children feel important – thought of – cherished. And for this mom, it’s postcards. As an avid photographer, I use my photography as postcards to send special scripture reminders of how much God loves them. And you know, they receive them with love. Since they are truly personalized, they become keepsakes.

I’m blessed to have two sons – two precious gifts from God. Regardless of their ages, they are still my babies.

Christmas is over – a new year will soon begin. Add a new tradition to your Christmas to-do’s. Write a letter to your children – tell them how much you love them. Send them cards throughout the year – reminders that you are thinking about them. Two precious gifts that cost little, but are priceless.

From this mom to all moms around the world – SHARE YOUR LOVE WITH YOUR CHIDLREN TODAY. Tell them how much they mean to you – Tell them and SHOW them.

Nancy Carey
www.nancycarey.com
Author: My Sister My Hero Cathy Porter Ms. Wheelchair MD 2007

So do not FEAR, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.

Isaiah 41:10 (New International Version)

So do not fear, for I am with you;

do not be dismayed, for I am your God.

I will strengthen you and help you;

I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Fear – four letters that raise the blood pressure and cause anxiety. And in 2009, fear has touched the lives of millions. Fear of losing a job. Fear of losing a spouse. Fear of losing a child. Fear of losing our health. Fear of losing a home. Fear of not being all we can be for God. Fear can consume every part of our life.

Fear was the topic of a sermon I heard recently. It reminded me of my fears, and it also reminded me that God knows my fears.

“Be not dismayed for I am your God.”

When fear grips our lives, we need to turn to God. We need to remember his words to us – Be not dismayed for I am your God. Although it seems difficult, and sometimes impossible to see the light at the end of the tunnel, we need to hold on to God’s words of encouragement.

GOD will not give us more than we can handle. He already gave us his SON – the fulfillment of all fears this life can give. It’s when we take our eyes off JESUS and his finished work on the Cross that we allow fear to take control.

We can’t live in FEAR – afraid to live; afraid to experience the joy of life of taking a train ride, a boat ride, an airplane ride. God is with us during the day and at night and everywhere we go on every form of transportation. He knows the beginning, middle and end of our lives – he knows our every thought and he knows the plans he has for us – and they don’t include living in fear.

“I will strengthen you and help you.”
With God’s strength, we can overcome any fear. But we must first ASK for help, which for many A-type personalities is a difficult thing to do. As I wrote that last sentence, Matt 7:7 came to mind, “Ask and it shall be given to you, seek, and you will find, knock, and it shall be opened to you.” When in fear, ask for God’s strength to overcome the fear.

“I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

God is there for us – he is our tower of strength in times of FEAR. He will hold us in the palm of his hand – protecting us from harm. But – in order to believe he can, we have to believe in Jesus Christ, his son. We can’t ask God to uphold us unless he sees his Son in us.

Fear can overtake us at every turn – and it will if we let it.

During the recent Halloween festivities, I was reminded of my commitment to God over thirty years ago to NOT celebrate any holiday that does not bring GLORY to God. And I stood firm on this commitment this year. And I believe I made an impression on my workplace by denying the holiday, “I don’t celebrate a holiday that doesn’t bring glory to God.” I didn’t let the fear of rejection from my coworkers keep me from speaking my faith; I was the only employee that confessed this statement out loud. As the volunteer photographer for company events, I declined this event. And many approached me with, “Why?” My reason allowed me to share my faith.

Isaiah 41:10 (New International Version)

So do not fear, for I am with you;

do not be dismayed, for I am your God.

I will strengthen you and help you;

I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

If you believe in Jesus, when FEAR tries to take control, repeat this scripture over and over until it touches the FEAR and destroys it!

If you don’t believe in Jesus, it’s time you do. Ask Jesus into your heart today and accept his strength to help you overcome your fears.

© Nancy Carey
author: My Sister My Hero Cathy Porter Ms. Wheelchair Maryland 2007
www.nancycarey.com

Shedding the old is a good lesson for Fall

Hard to believe it is Fall of 2009. Where did the year go?
As an avid scrapbooker, I write a monthly journal of the “achievements” of the month. And of course I add lots of pictures to the journal as memories of the previous month’s events.

As Fall “falls” upon the landscape, I’m amazed at the blaze of orange and reds that blanket the trees and ground. My camera has captured some beautiful images of this transformation; a subtle reminder that summer is gone, and the cool weather is taking control of the remaining months of 2009.

Fall also reminds me of releasing. As the leaves fall upon the ground, they “release” their ties that bind them to the tree. When God created this cycle, he knew that shedding of the old prepares for the new.

Without shedding the old leaves, the trees will not be ready for the birth of the new leaves in the spring. Trees continue to grow bigger and stronger because they recycle. They don’t stay the same year after year – they continually shed the old to give birth to new. They achieve their goal when all their leaves are on the ground, which doesn’t happen overnight, but over a period of time designed by God. This time period allows us to enjoy the beauty of the transformation throughout the fall season.

Shedding the old is a good lesson for Fall. As 2009 turns the corner to closure, it’s time we “shed” our old beliefs or habits so our lives will be ready for the “rebirth”cycle in 2010. It’s time we look inside our hearts and release the ties that bind us to the past; let go of habits that hinder instead of build. Let go of anger and replace with peace. Let go of relationships that destroy instead of encourage. Let go of anything that keeps us from Jesus, the finisher of our faith. Regardless of what other people have done to change our lives (downsizing, loss of home etc,) simply RELEASE the past so the SPRING will return in our step!

Winter, spring, summer and fall – all have a purpose from God; and so do we. God wants us to continue to recycle and grow bigger and stronger – physically, intellectually and spiritually. But as long as we hold on to the past, the newness of life will not occur, God doesn’t want us to stay the same – he wants us to grow into the person he created us to be.

As you watch the trees shed their leaves this fall, take a moment to release the ties that bind you to the past. Then review your previous month’s achievements. If you don’t have any to record, then get about God’s purpose for your life to create some for next month. Life is dull without achievements – as the tree prepares all year to shed its leaves in the fall, prepare for your BIG release next month – you don’t have to wait a year to see the results.

God's Blessings for a BEAUTIFUL FALL season.

Nancy Carey
Author: My Sister My Hero Cathy Porter Ms. Wheelchair MD 2007
www.nancycarey.com

Through our Misery we find our Ministry

With Jesus, everything is possible. His outreach started with one!

Misery, according to Webster’s Dictionary, means a state of ill-being due to affliction or misfortune or a feeling of intense unhappiness.

Everyone, at sometime in their life, experiences misery. It’s never welcome and definitely never fun, but it happens. For some, such intense unhappiness causes a total change in personality; a withdrawal from the normal activities of life.

Regardless of what causes the misery; a loss of a loved one, loss of a job, a wrong choice – whatever, it is real – emotionally and physically real. The overwhelming feeling of loss or failure can cause shame - a painful emotion resulting from an awareness of inadequacy or guilt.

Misery can lasts a few days, a few months – and sometimes for years. It’s a journey though a dark tunnel where the only light is from a pin hole! But it doesn’t have to last forever, and it doesn’t have to be a time to forget. It should be a time of learning and expanding the level of faith one has in their Lord and Savoir, Jesus Christ.

We were never promised a continual rose garden – along the way there will be thorns. But the question is “Do we live with the pain of the thorns, or do we pull them out and let the wounds heal? Healing means recognizing the source of the misery and accepting the grace of Jesus Christ for the victory.

Through the misery, we do find our ministry. Or, the ministry we have grows stronger and reaches more people than ever before. It expands our compassion and strengthens our determination to comfort those who are experiencing a similar tribulation.

For those in the midst of the misery, it is hard to hear the words, “I know what you are going through” from someone who has NOT experienced it. Only a person who has been through your misery can honestly say, “I have been there and am now an overcomer!”

Overcomers are victorious – they pulled out the thorns of their misery and birthed a ministry to reach just one with their message of hope.

Everyone has a ministry; an outreach to help another person. Just as Jesus went to the cross for just one, our ministry can help just one.

As I wrote that last sentence, the lyrics from a song written by Babbie Mason titled “Each One, Reach One” comes to mind:

But each one can reach oneAs we follow after Christ we all can lead oneWe can lead one to the SaviorAnd together we can tell the world that Jesus is the wayIf we each one reach one

Through our misery we DO find our ministry. We do not have to live in a state of ill-being due to affliction or misfortune or a feeling of intense unhappiness.

And our ministry can start with one -- not elaborate or worldwide – it can be one person offering words of hope and compassion to another.

With Jesus, everything is possible. His outreach started with one!

© Nancy Carey
Author: My Sister My Hero Cathy Porter Ms. Wheelchair Maryland 2007
www.nancycarey.com

An Addicts Life

I confess … I have an addiction. And NO, I do not need help to quit because I don’t want to.

In 2001 I got hooked – completely. It wasn’t a slow addiction – but immediately took control of my life. Day after day it consumed me. I couldn’t escape its control – the more I resisted the more control it took.

I didn’t feel trapped within the addiction – but felt exhilarated by it. The joy it brought me was incredible. And, not only me, but all who benefited from my addiction.

Wonder what my addiction is?

I’ll give you a few hints:
It is a life changing habit.
It costs money
It consumes my time
It brings great joy

That’s a few of what it does … now here are a few of what it doesn’t do …
It doesn’t destroy the body
It doesn’t break the law
It doesn’t separate families
It doesn’t require I hide it

What is my addiction? In a moment, but first …

I’ll also confess that I am addicted for life – and no one can send me to rehab. Since it captured my life, I’ve become a different person. I’ve changed – I’ve learned that without it, life would be dull and boring.

OK … I’m ready to reveal my addiction …

Ready … here it is ….

SCRAP BOOKING … GOTCHA!!! You thought it was something completely different, and harmful.

Yes, the addiction changed my life. And not only my life, but the life of my family and friends. Since 2001, I’ve created over 50 albums of life memories; cherished events of the life of the Carey family. And each month as I add the precious events to the pages of my albums, I thank GOD for his revelation of this habit for photography and writing. Pictures and stories combined create the whole story of the Carey family. I treasure these albums and know one day they will share the story of how much Nancy Carey loved her family. And without wondering who she was, or what she loved to do, they can simply open the pages of the albums and see for themselves.

SO … there you have it! I’m addicted to Scrapbooking and proud of it. Now I wouldn’t suggest you become an addict of anything – but scrapbooking, now that is an addiction everyone can live with.

© Nancy Carey
Author: My Sister My Hero Cathy Porter Ms. Wheelchair Maryland 2007
www.nancycarey.com

Are YOU God's Angel?

God answers prayer, no doubt about it. And he answers prayer though people like you and me.

When we pray specifically, God answers specifically. He speaks to the heart of people who hold the answer; whether it be financial or help for a physical need.

Many people hear that still small voice to be the answer to prayer, but are too consumed with the almighty $$$ that they lose a blessing from God. They fear the loss of profit to bless another, or they fear the loss of “party” time to help another with a physical need.

God wants to bless his children. But we live in the “instant gratification” society that wants answer to pray NOW, in our time, not in God’s time.

I recently experienced the request for the NOW answer from God. As a first time author, I requested a blessing from a well-known author for sponsorship to a special training session to help my book reach the masses. I heard that still small voice tell me to email them with my story – and to tell it from my heart. And I obeyed. That was weeks ago, and yet - no response.

What did I learn from this delay?

First, everything happens for God’s glory and in His time. He told me to send the email, but he didn’t tell me when the response would come.

Second, I learned that not every successful author responds to email, even though their website says, “CONTACT US” and we will respond to your inquiry. I pray that success doesn’t stop me from hearing that still small voice to be a blessing – regardless of the cost!

Why is the response to my email so IMPORTANT?

My goal for writing My Sister My Hero Cathy Porter Ms. Wheelchair Maryland 2007 was to share Cathy’s story with the world. A story so special it has to reach the masses. But the book is not my final goal.

The final goal - a Lifetime TV Movie to show the world that Cathy Porter is touched by God. Although her life has been full of trails and tribulations, she has prevailed. If you think your life is bad, consider Cathy’s – cerebral palsy, stomach and bone cancer, arthritis, lymphedema, heart issues and most recently, colon cancer.

When the movie, My Sisters Keeper, was released, I knew I had to see it. And what an impact it had on my life. It touched the core of my heart, and instilled a drive in me to see Cathy’s story on the big screen. As a sister, and a daughter – the characters in the movie reached deep into the recesses of my heart and revealed forgotten memories.

Did I cry? You bet … all the way through the movie. The story line, the characters, the trials and triumphs of My Sisters Keeper confirmed my goal for the book. Cathy’s story must be told.
What I’ve learned from this adventure is I can’t do it alone. I need God in my corner to direct the path to the movie. Although I want it to happen NOW, God sees the BIG picture and knows the perfect time for My Sister My Hero Cathy Porter Ms. Wheelchair Maryland 2007 to reach the BIG screen.

As a first time author, I’ve been blessed! But I know God has plans for my life – plans to bless me in more ways than just financial. Plans to use my hands to bless the world with stories of hope and encouragement. And, He will send his ANGEL to answer my prayer in his time!!!

Never give up on your dreams – be assured that God hears your prayers. The longer you wait, the better the reward!!! I see a HUGE reward ahead – not for me, but for all who read the book and, eventually, see the movie. Yes, Cathy is touched by God. And I am proud to call her my sister!!!

Are you God’s Angel?

If God has spoken to your heart to GIVE to another without regard of return on investment – obey!!! As he uses YOU to be a blessing, he will also BLESS your life by sending an ANGEL to answer your prayers!
Writing this story has reminded me TO OBEY his still small voice when he directs me to be an answer to prayer!

© Nancy Carey
Author: My Sister My Hero Cathy Porter Ms. Wheelchair Maryland 2007
http://www.nancycarey.com/

Abundance is FREE

What can you give when you have nothing to give? What did you think about when you read that question? Money? Well, it is the most logical. But it’s not the answer I was looking for.

You can be flat broke and give from your abundance. I know what you are thinking, “If I am flat broke, what abundance do I have?”

I’ll share the answer in a moment, but first think about this …

What do you have in abundance that is yours to give away – other than MONEY? Think outside the box and search your heart.

Come on … I know you know the answer.

Actually, there are two things EVERYONE has in abundance …

Time and Talent – whether you are rich or poor, you have these in abundance!!!

When God created us, he gave us the same twenty-four hours per day and he gifted us with special talents. Some recognize their talents immediately i.e. singing or drawing, but there are also talents that are not seen or heard. They are talents within the heart. While many use their time and talent for selfish reasons, many use their time and talent for Godly reasons.

Volunteering opened my eyes to what giving from my abundance really means. It does not mean giving of my MONEY (although I do), but it means giving of my Time and Talent freely to help God’s children.

I was reminded how precious our time and talents are this weekend. My husband and I gave up our weekend TIME to visit his brother in another state who is experiencing difficulties with his health. Our intention was to just visit and enjoy their company.

But God had other plans in mind. He had plans to prosper both families – one as the giver of time and talent and one as the receiver of the time and talent.

Hours before our departure, the bathroom toilet broke and needed immediate attention – an expensive repair. But, instead of calling the plumber, my husband pulled up his sleeves and made the necessary repairs saving his brother hundreds of dollars. And he did it for FREE – he used his Time and Talent (no, he is not a plumber) but experienced in plumbing repairs. He gave of his abundance of time and knowledge to bless his brother.

Without any exchange of MONEY, both brothers were blessed.
When we think of ABUNDANCE, we automatically think of MONEY and what it can buy – BIG houses, expensive cars and elaborate vacations. Or as most associate, the life of the rich and famous.

But that’s not what God thinks of abundance. He thinks of abundance as giving all we have to the work of the Lord. When we give from the heart, we give out of the abundance of all the riches in the world. And the return on the investment is treasures worth more than all the gold in the world – God’s blessings!!!

So the next time you’re asked to GIVE from your abundance, consider the abundance of your time and talent before you consider the MONEY in your pocket.

(c) Nancy Carey
Author: My Sister My Hero Cathy Porter Ms. Wheelchair MD 2007
www.nancycarey.com

Families Unite for Jesus

Family – the glue that gives life meaning; the bond that should be stronger than steel has been weakened by society.

Don’t believe my words – read the newspapers, or watch the news. Families are dissolving faster than sugar dissolves in a warm beverage.

Husbands are having affairs. Wives are having affairs. Parents are putting work before family leaving the children to fend for themselves for hours each day. Parents are pushing children into sports (for their own gratification). Children are putting sports before studies because they read about the huge sums of money the players earn. And the list goes on and on. No wonder society is in such a state of disarray.

Family values are disappearing. In their place is the “instant gratification” of the me generation. And I don’t mean just the youth – I mean ALL generations. We’ve become the disposable generation. Don’t like it, throw it out and buy something else, or someone new. Sad to say, this is the state of the family in 2009.

Television and Hollywood teach deception is the norm. Don’t like your husband/wife – have an affair – but don’t get caught. And if you’ve been watching the news lately, politicians and sports figures are at the top of the list. When the dirty secrets are revealed, they go on television to confess – but only AFTER they were caught. These are educated people – not blind to the results of their actions. What does this teach our children? Certainly not the vows taken in marriage!

Deception is the work of the devil. He is on earth to kill, steal and destroy. And he is doing a great job within the family unit. Sad to say, he has lots of help by the media, television and the movies. We can’t watch regular television without commercials that should be x-rated. We can’t watch the family rated shows without some reference to immoral acts. Who judges these shows for values? I, for one, think they need new judges.

The family unit is dissolving and the world wonders why.

We are responsible for what we watch, what we hear, and what we do with the information from these sources. If we chose to fill our minds with trash, trash will be the result. That old clique “garbage in, garbage out” holds true in today’s society.

God gave us dominion over our lives – and he also gave us Jesus to help us make the right decisions. When Jesus died on the cross, he said, “It is FINISHED!” The devil was defeated at that moment in time. And when we accept Jesus into our hearts, we have His POWER to overcome the devil; to take back what he has stolen from our families.

Families are God’s creation. He started with Adam and Eve and today he has billions of children. Each child has a free will to choose Jesus as their Lord and Savior. And he is saddened by the conditions of 2009 and the number of his children that have rejected his Son Jesus.

Jesus will return – one day; the day and time only God knows. But until Jesus returns, we need to set about his business. We need to take control of our minds, filter out the devil thoughts, images, and wrong choices. We need to take up our cross daily and follow Jesus.
Parents – you hold the lives of your children in your hands. God gave you these precious gems to nurture and love; to provide security and education. But most of all, to lead them into the arms of Jesus. Don’t destroy their faith in you because of your desire for the lifestyle of the rich and famous – or the make believe characters on television or movie.

Jesus is the remedy for the dissolving family. Although we live in a world of routine, sometimes our routine is upset when life takes a new road to new adventures.

As I thought about the word “routine,” lots of images crossed my vision:
Up at the same time everyday to prepare for work
Leave at the same time everyday to drive to work
Take the same route everyday to work
Eat lunch at the same time every day
Leave work at the same time everyday
Take the same route home
Eat dinner at the same time everyday
Go to bed at the same time everyday

I’m certain everyone has variations on their personal routine; especially those with children. Yet the fact remains; we are creatures of routine.

But what happens when we change just one element of our routine?

Changing one fifteen minute block of time in my routine changed my life. Just fifteen minutes – every morning wedged between “Up at the same time everyday to prepare for work” and “Leave at the same time everyday to drive to work” revolutionized my thinking and my goals.

What was so powerful that it changed my life – in only fifteen minutes every morning? No, it was not physical exercise, although it is important also.

Fifteen minutes of reading the BIBLE opened my mind and heart to God’s plan for my life. While I nourished my body with food, I also nourished my mind with God’s wisdom for the day.

Our mind needs spiritual nourishment just as our body needs vitamins and minerals to sustain a healthy life. Society is consumed with improving the “look” of the body, but spends little time on improving the “look” of the mind. Although we can’t see the “mind,” we experience the effects of its neglect.

God gave everyone twenty-four hours in a day – and for most, eight of those hours are consumed with sleep plus another ten hours for work leaves approximately six hours for all the other activities of life. Not a lot of time to accomplish all our to-do’s necessary in the busy world we live in, but more than enough time to spent time in the Word of God.

How did my “morning spiritual nourishment” change my life?

It assured me of my salvation with the Lord. When Jesus said, “It Is FINISHED!” – He meant it is FINISHED. He paid the price for my sins – once and for all. I now live under the waterfall of His GRACE. Through his death on the cross, I have assurance of eternal life in heaven and for blessings while I am here on earth. One day I will be in my new home and see Jesus face to face to personally thank him for all he has done in my life!!!

What else have I learned from my spiritual nourishment?

That God gave me a gift, actually two, no – three: writing, photography and volunteering with the disabled. And once I began to exercise my gifts, the blessings flowed like living water over my life. They flowed through my fingers when I wrote My Sister My Hero Cathy Porter Ms. Wheelchair Maryland 2007 in nine weeks. They flowed through the lens of my camera when photographing his beautiful creations. They flowed through my outreach into the disability community.

The flowed and they flowed and they continue to flow.

I believe spiritual nourishment is vital to living a life full of adventures. But I must warn you …

Fifteen minutes wedged between my “Up at the same time everyday to prepare for work” and “Leave at the same time everyday to drive to work” expanded into listening to Bible study and worship music on the way to/from work, reading great books written by the anointed of God which has led me to an unquenchable thirst to be all I can be for the Lord.

Routine is great – and is necessary for a successful life. But routine without the Word of God in our lives is not healthy. It’s a routine that needs to be shaken to its roots and reorganized to make reading the Word of God the most important time of our morning routine.

We can have Routine and Adventure in our life – God’s way!!!

When we make time for God, he will make the desires of our heart a reality and give us his adventures of a lifetime!!!

© Nancy Carey
My Sister My Hero Cathy Porter Ms. Wheelchair Maryland 2007
http://www.nancycarey.com/

What does the word DISABILITY mean to you?

What does the word DISABILITY mean to you?

For me, it means “wheelchair.” Why? Because I’ve volunteered since March 2006 with incredible ladies in wheelchairs. So when my sister, Cathy Porter (Ms. Wheelchair Maryland 2007) and I were invited to attend the W.E.A.N. Self-Esteem Workshop for Girls 13-18 with Disabilities, my first thought was “wheelchairs.” I was the event photographer while Cathy was a “whatever needed” volunteer.

But I was totally wrong in my perception. What WALKED through the door of this event were incredible girls NOT in wheelchairs. These precious young ladies were labeled “disabled” not because of their physical disability, but because of a brain disability. The mother-daughter event touched my heart – and changed my thinking.

My life changed the day I photographed these girls – I learned how beautiful they are on the inside as well as the outside. Their “joy” was evident with their contagious laughter and willingness to share what their disability meant to them.

What did I learn from these precious girls?
· They are very protective of their families
· They want to be treated equal
· They love new adventures
· They love the CAMERA
· And most of all, they love their MOTHERS

Mothers – oh my, I was overwhelmed with emotion at their dedication to their daughters. It reminded me of Cathy and our mom – the mom who refused to put Cathy away when she was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy.

My eyes were also opened to another revelation – wheelchair users love to volunteer. These precious Queens from W.E.A.N. (Women Empowered Abilities Now) were the most giving volunteers to these able-bodied attendees. The served with their hearts – and gave love to all who walked across the threshold of this event.

Disability means different things to different people. A disability can be mild to severe, but it almost means an opportunity for the able-bodied (body and brain) to volunteer to help.

I WALKED away from this event with renewed appreciation of ALL my abilities. And I also WALKED away with a renewed quest to share the blessings of volunteering.

Appreciate who you are – what you can do – and never WALK away from an opportunity to GIVE of your abilities.

www.wean1.org
www.nancycarey.com

(c) Nancy Carey

Happy Independence Day

A day noted with freedom, or better known as the 4th of July. A mid-year point that says summer is here, and will soon be gone. A day of celebrations with family and friends.

But what does Independence Day mean to you – PERSONALLY?

We celebrate the day with hot dogs and hamburgers and every “outdoor” food imaginable. We gather to watch the BIG fireworks display and wonder at the splendor of the lights in the sky.

But what does Independence Day mean to you – PERSONALLY?

Do you reflect on the freedoms you have and how often you take them for granted? The simple freedoms to choose where you live, where you work and where you spend time in rest and relaxation?

You do have a choice in these matters, although you may not realize it. The choices you make effect the independence you experience tomorrow.

When you live your life according to the Word of God, you experience true independence - not just within your nation, but from sin. No need to wait for one day a year to celebrate Independence Day – but as a child of God, everyday is Independence Day. Independence from SIN with the assurance that once you accept Jesus as your PERSONAL Lord and Savior, your independence assures you an eternal life of endless celebrations.

And when this nation –The United States of America, returns to its roots with God, this nation will return to the blessings of God.

According to Proverbs 14:34, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.

The United States of America, a land that many used to say they love. But in today’s economic situations brought on my greed, many have lost their zeal for this nation blessed of God.

Remember the song you sang in grade school …

God Bless America
Land that I love
Stand beside Her
And Guide Her
Through the night with the lights up above

The lyric was written out of a heart with love for our country; a time when freedom was vital and fought for. But today, we take our freedoms for granted. We allow the “political” in-the-know take control and use their powers for evil instead of the good God intended.

Stand up for your country that you love. Don’t sit back and take your freedoms for granted. Hold the “political” in-the-know group accountable with the same accountability they hold you.

As Citizens of the United States of America, we hold to the truths in the Constitution of the United States of America. Don’t forget your rights, nor your freedoms. One by one they are disappearing and we, as a nation founded on the Blessings of God, need to hold precious the freedoms granted us by God.

So today, this July 4th, 2009 – take a moment and reflect on what this Independence Day means to you – PERSONALLY.

Happy Independence Day!!!

Nancy Carey
www.nancycarey.com
Author: My Sister My Hero Cathy Porter Ms. Wheelchair Maryland 2007

Michael Jackson -- A Sad Story

Michael Jackson made the news once again. The world is mourning the loss of a great musical talent.

Michael was blessed with an incredible gift of music that reached the world. But it wasn't enough to bring him happiness. The music he made could not calm the storm raging within his heart.

When God blesses us with incredible talent, it is a gift. A gift that we should treasure and take care of. As we have heard through television, radio, newspaper and every form of communication, Micheal Jackson will be remembered as one of the greatest music talents of all times. Sad to say, Michael will also be remembered for other aspects of his life that were not so great.

What lesson can we learn from Michael Jackson? Great success comes with a price! Their investigative techniques taught millions how to avoid getting caught. The CSI who solved the crime discovered the incriminating evidence in the smallest detail. In most cases, it was hidden in plain sight.

Typographical Error, better known to billions by its nick name – TYPO has evaded capture for centuries. The elusive TYPO is a professional, experienced in the field of cloak and dagger. It has no allegiance to anyone; all are fair game to its deceptive practices.

TYPO has no fear of capture. It’s a master of disguise – transforming itself into any character or number; loves to twist itself in misspelled words and worst of all, incorrect word usage: there, their or they’re; two, too or to; you’re or your to mention a few of the obvious.

Nothing is safe from its raff; no document, spreadsheet, flyer, website, white paper, newsletter or blog – nothing is beyond its grasp in inflicting its ultimate sting – EMBARRASSMENT.

When TYPO rears its ugly head, the PROOFREADERS job is to squash it. But TYPO is never defeated. It’s been well trained to divert, regroup, and attack again.

Writers Beware: TYPO is on the loose. It is out to seek and destroy. And someone somewhere needs your blessing upon their life today.

When life gets us down, we immediately turn to the “pity party” syndrome. Its part of life – and at some point – everyone experiences it. Even those who know it does nothing to alleviate the source of the “pity party,” they dive headfirst into the whole of despair.

Blessings come in many forms – a kind word, a surprise card in the mail, and in our more modern times - an email and website.

I was blessed today because I blessed others through two of these forms – a phone call and an email which led to my website www.nancycarey.com and my book My Sister My Hero Cathy Porter Ms. Wheelchair Maryland 2007.

Little did I know when I answered my phone and responded to an email that my blessing would lift them out of their “pity party.”

The blessing didn’t come from my outreach, but from life experiences recorded in My Sister My Hero Cathy Porter Ms. Wheelchair Maryland 2007. The phone call comforted a dear friend who recently lost her mother and the email comforted a new friend who is experiencing health issues. Cathy’s story was able to bring hope to these two special people.

So today – don’t let the sun go down without blessing someone. Make a phone call, mail a card or write an email – better yet, visit someone. OR, whatever form you need to release your blessings.

Blessings sent out never return void … they return HUGE dividends.

www.nancycarey.com
(c) Nancy Carey

Caretakers are “Angels” in Disguise

Caretakers are “Angels” in Disguise

According to Webster’s Dictionary, caretaker is defined as a person hired to take care of something or someone. The word that caught my attention is hired. By definition, again from Webster’s Dictionary, hired means to get the services of a person in return for payment.

When I think of the word caretaker, a different image comes to mind. A person not hired for pay, but who volunteers from the heart to help another in need. Their services are vast, from a kind word to a much needed bath. The reach of the caretaker reaches near and far.

On March 11, 2006, I entered into a new realm of caretaker. Prior to March 11, 2006, I was the long distance caretaker for one precious lady, My Sister My Hero, Cathy Porter Ms. Wheelchair Maryland 2007. Cathy has Cerebral Palsy … but it does stop her from living life to its fullest. Read her memoir at http://www.nancycarey.com/.

Although we rarely lived in the same state, God still used me in service for him. He used my voice … and he used it well. In addition to being sisters, Cathy and I are best friends; rarely a day goes by without a phone call. Like clockwork, I call her to confirm she is ok and all is well. Being a caretaker is more than caring for the physical body, but for the emotional side as well.

A kind word is like good medicine – it encourages the heart and gives hope. From one precious lady, God spread my wings and widened my caretaker path. He opened the doors to the Ms. Wheelchair America program http://www.mswheelchairamerica.org/. A program that expanded my “caretaker” duties wider than I could ever imagine. And what was my payment – absolute JOY.

It’s an honor to be a caretaker, to offer my able-bodied arms, legs, eyes and ears to those less fortunate. And to offer my services without pay is a blessing.

So the next time you hear the word “caretaker,” don’t turn away and say, “Not me!” But open your heart to the possibility of being a blessing to someone – without pay. Send a card, make a call, stop by to visit – once you offer your services to God, he will use you as an “angel” for someone in need.

http://www.nancycarey.com/
(c) Nancy Carey

First Time Author

The feeling is overwhelming. The sense of accomplishment is awesome. And the reality of holding the book in your hand is tremendous.

Many dream of writing a book, but for many, it remains a dream. To make the dream a reality takes determination and a driving force within to reach the goal line.

My dream of writing My Sister My Hero Cathy Porter Ms. Wheelchair Maryland 2007 began in 2007. For two years I spoke of, dreamed of, but never wrote the book. Oh yes, I attempted the daunting task many times, even to the point of creating a fancy Excel spreadsheet with many tabs, each representative of a chapter. I thought I was on my way, but God had a different plan. When it came to actually taking the “bullet points” from the fancy Excel spreadsheet and turn them into a story, the well of words dried up. I couldn’t type two words that made sense. And believe me; I tried, time and time again.

Writers Block is a difficult thing to accept. It is very frustrating, and for me, it actually made me angry at myself. I wanted, desperately, to write Cathy’s story. But the more I tried to write it, the harder it got to write it. Finally, I heard God’s still small voice say, “It’s not time!” And it wasn’t – there was too much left to experience, too many incredible memories that had to be told. So with that realization, I stopped trying to write it and started to experience the incredible chapters of the future book.

When the time was God’s time, the words flowed like living stories. I couldn’t type fast enough to record them all. And from first word to finished book – a total of four months – my dream became a reality.

What did I learn through this experience – listen to that still small voice. God knows the perfect time for everything. He knows what needs to be shared and what the title should be. Oh yeah – there was another realization. From my first thought of writing the memoir, the title changed many, many, many times. Each idea lasted a brief time, then as quickly as it entered my mind, it disappeared. Then the reference I used for years came to mind, My Sister My Hero Cathy – God added Porter, Ms. Wheelchair Maryland 2007. No, actually, God created the entire title. He knew long before my thought of writing the memoir what the title would be, how many pages it would be, and who would read it.

Joy is a beautiful word. It describes a mixture of exhilaration and happiness blended with a bit of humble pie. As a mother of two handsome sons, precious gifts from God, I know the feeling of joy!

As a new author, in many ways, I feel like I gave birth to God’s incredible gift of words.

Never give up on your dream of being an author. For one day, it WILL become a reality and your life will never be the same.

http://www.nancycarey.com/
(c) Nancy Carey
